"You're here because you know something. What you know you can't explain, but you feel it. You've felt it your entire life, that there's something wrong with the world. You don't know what it is, but it's there, like a splinter in your mind, driving you mad. It is this feeling that has brought you to me." Morpheus - Matrix

The water level of the Danube is still high

In the last weekend's vibezz post, I mentioned that the recent rainy weather had caused flooding in the rivers, especially the Danube, which caused problems in Germany, Austria and in Hungary also. The rainy weather continues, even though it is warm, thunderstorm cells regularly cause rain during the day. As I write these lines, it's raining, but at least it's not "wet hot", i.e. hot with high humidity, which is not my favorite. The water level is still high.

Since I was also curious about the water level of the Danube, I decided after lunch on Sunday to see what the situation was like at one of my favorite places nearby. This place is called Donau-Altarm Altenwörth  - a little oasis - where a branch of the old Danube meets the main Danube. There is also a dam here, through which you can walk or cycle to the other side of the Danube. Usually a lot of people visit this place to relax, do water sports, fishing, swim, walk, run or bike. The bicycle route along the Danube is very famous, many tourists come to do this huge distance.

Under the bridge, they made a spawning and hatching place for fish, which is made with rocks circles and the water continues like small waterfalls. It's a great relaxing place if you like listening to the sounds of the water. In good weather, many people use to dangle their feet in it, or dogs play in it.

On Sunday afternoon, there were hardly any people outside, the old Danube was also flooding, washing out the road and only the top of the bridge was visible. So we couldn't cross the strip of land opposite to see the main Danube. Apart from us, there was a large family outside who decided to cross the Danube to the other side by canoe.

Since I wanted to see the Danube, we went to the big city 22 km away, which is one of the closest places to cross to the other side of the Danube. The plan was to approach our favorite place from the other side.

The name of the place is Tulln an der Donau - the city of flowers - it is located on the banks of the Danube. Many people walked and relaxed on the banks of the Danube, the city made this place very nicely full of flowers, trees and seating opportunities.

The Nibelung well is located here and has a Hungarian connection, because the group of statues depicts the Hun king Attila receiving his bride, Kriemhild, who disembarked from the ship arriving from Passau.

The water level of the Danube is high, dirty and its drift is strong and full of wood debris, but the water has not yet crossed the earth embankment.

We continued our journey, but got lost a couple of times on the way, as we left our new favorite friend Tomtom Navi at home. But we saw the Danube in another settlement and as it turned out, we had to go another 5 km from there to reach our destination, but since it was heavy watery hot, and the storm clouds also gathered we decided to go another time and came home. By the time we got home, it started to rain.

  1. Beautiful pictures. We've had flooding in East Texas as well. I'm getting used to the "wet heat" but it is sticky and awful at times. I am originally from North Texas which is a dry heat, much easier to tolerate. Anyhow, I do love your stories and I enjoyed the added photos with this one. Thank you for sharing.
