"A large coronal hole will begin to face Earth this weekend. A solar wind stream flowing from this zone is expected to reach Earth beginning July 12th with the main influence by July 13/14. It is possible that a geomagnetic storm watch will be issued in the days ahead. Stay tuned to SolarHam.com for the latest updates.
What is a coronal hole?
A coronal hole is an opening in the Sun's atmosphere associated with open magnetic field lines. High-speed solar winds originate from within these holes which appear as dark zones when viewed at different optical wavelengths. Coronal holes can occur at any time during a solar cycle, but are typically larger and more frequent towards solar maximum."
Newly assigned sunspot region (AR 4136) is now turning into view from off the northeast limb and is currently producing minor C-Flares and was also the source of an M1.3 solar flare at 04:25 UTC (July 9). Image by SDO/HMI.
